It's Officially Transition Time For Your Lawn!
Our 4 weeks of spring are coming to an end as the forecast appears to be touching close to 100 degrees for the next week. I am being hopeful when I say that it is only for the next week, but most likely the cooler weather is behind us, the soil temperature is going to rise quickly. It will be bermuda/paspalum season before we know it.
The soil temperature is still hovering right around 60 degrees so we have not seen an excessive amount of growth with our warm season grasses, but I am sure most people are starting to see their lawns green up quickly. If you did not overseed this past year and your lawn is a little behind on color the answer is fertilizer. The Soil Burst starter 5-15-10 is your answer because we are looking to warm up the soil and using this dark pelletized granular will get you going in the right direction. The magnesium, calcium, and iron will give your lawn a great kick start and get it ready for the growing season as it begins to arrive. The nice part of using a slow release product like this is that you can expect to receive 4-6 weeks of results. Read the rest of this entry »

Spring Transition and Your Lawn
After having an up and down winter with temperatures bouncing back and forth from 70 to below freezing, it appears we only have the heat to look forward to for the next 5-6 months. If you are new to the desert climate or growing grass in the southwest we are just a few weeks away from our annual transition period from winter ryegrass back to our warm season bermudagrass or paspalum lawns. Basic Water and Fertilizer Schedule January-June/ Old Pueblo 50 Mile Race Report
It appears that all the cooler days are now behind and it’s time to get our grasses out of dormancy and greened up. If you have an overseeded lawn right now you are going to see an influx of growth in the next couple months and it will be important to stay on top of it so you don’t shade out your warm season grass underneath. Often times in March-May it will be necessary to mow your ryegrass 2x per week to reduce the grass canopy and allow light to get down into the grass and get it growing. Read the rest of this entry »

Pre-emergent Weed Control for Your Lawn/Old Pueblo 50 Mile Run
The weather is starting to break from the cooler winter days and with the timely rain showers you will start to see some summer annual weeds start to appear in your turf areas. We are getting very close to the time to put down pre-emergent weed control to help with many of these and to relieve some of your future headaches. Many of the weeds we dread the most can be controlled early with a pre-emergent granular application and in the next few weeks or so I highly suggest you get one down on your lawn. Cold temps and your lawn……
While the rest of the country is enduring several feet of snow this week, the desert Southwest is being hit with a pretty good freeze. It isn’t too common to see temperatures that only reach into the high 10’s and low 20’s, but we have been getting a few days of that midwestern weather and it appears we will have a couple more days before relief comes this weekend.
I have received quite a few emails regarding turf conditions and potential issues with ice and the hard freeze since the weather reports came out the other day so I just wanted to write a short blog today telling you not to worry. Read the rest of this entry »

Treat Your Lawn w/ Some Fertilizer/Rivaly Week in College Football
Well it’s Thanksgiving week. As is usually the case we saw a little bit of frost in the outlining areas this morning and it appears we may get a couple more light frosts later in the week. When we start to get frost you will notice that your beautiful ryegrass might be losing some of that new grass color. The best thing you can do before we get some of the harder frosts is to apply a fertilizer such as calcium nitrate 15.5-0-0, 15-15-15 or if even a slow release dark pelletized product such as Soil Burst or Milorganite.
