New Year, New Sod from West Coast Turf
There’s something inspiring about the start of a new year—a clean slate, fresh goals, and renewed motivation to make improvements around your home. And if your lawn struggled last year due to heat, drought, pests, or just plain wear and tear, the new year is the perfect time to consider upgrading your turf. At West Coast Turf, we believe that “New Year, New Sod” isn’t just a catchy phrase—it’s one of the smartest home improvement investments you can make, especially in the climates of Arizona and California.
Why Winter Is a Great Time to Install Sod
Many homeowners assume that sod installations should wait for spring, but in the West Coast and Southwest, winter is often an ideal time. Cooler temperatures reduce stress on new turf, roots establish more efficiently, and shorter days mean less water demand. In Arizona and much of California, winter conditions are mild enough to support healthy establishment, particularly for cool-season sod or overseeded warm-season lawns.
Warm-season varieties like bermudagrass will remain dormant, but that doesn’t prevent root development. Laying dormant sod now means you’ll be rewarded with a strong, vigorous green-up when spring arrives.
Choose the Right Sod for Your 2026 Goals
The new year offers an opportunity to rethink what you want from your lawn. More durability? Lower water use? Better color in winter? West Coast Turf offers varieties tailored for every priority:
- Drought-tolerant bermudagrass perfect for Arizona’s desert landscapes and California’s water-conscious regions.
- Cool-season blends ideal for coastal California or shaded areas needing year-round color.
- Hybrid bermudagrass options used on professional sports fields—excellent for high-traffic yards and active families.
If you’re not sure which variety suits your needs, we can help guide you based on climate, soil type, sun exposure, and how you use your outdoor space.
Kick Off the Year with Better Water Efficiency
New sod is an opportunity to reset your irrigation habits. Winter installations typically require less water, and starting fresh allows you to correct any inefficiencies in your existing system. Check for clogged nozzles, poor coverage, or outdated timers. Smart irrigation paired with high-quality sod can save water—and money—all year long.
Refresh Your Soil for a Strong Start
If 2025 was tough on your lawn, the underlying issue may be tired or compacted soil. Before installing new sod, take the time to prep properly: remove old grass, loosen the soil, and incorporate organic matter if needed. This step alone can dramatically improve the long-term health of your turf.
Consider it the lawncare equivalent of a New Year’s detox—clearing out the old to make space for new, thriving growth.
A New Lawn for a New Year
A fresh sod installation is one of the quickest ways to transform your home’s curb appeal and outdoor livability. Whether you want a soft, green play space, a professional-grade lawn, or a low-maintenance landscape that still looks stunning, West Coast Turf has a variety that fits your vision.
As you set goals for the new year, don’t overlook the value of a vibrant, healthy lawn. With the right sod and proper installation, 2026 can be the year your outdoor space becomes your favorite part of your home.

Seasonal Turf Tips for Arizona & California
Seasonal Turf Tips for Arizona & California: How to Keep Your Lawn Thriving This Winter
As winter settles into Arizona and California, homeowners and property managers face a unique set of challenges—and opportunities—when it comes to maintaining healthy, beautiful turf. While many parts of the country hunker down for hard freezes and dormant landscapes, the West Coast and Southwest enjoy a milder, more flexible season for lawn care. At West Coast Turf, we know that understanding these regional nuances is the key to keeping your grass performing at its best year-round.
Cooler Weather, Stronger Roots
Winter is one of the most important times for developing strong root systems, especially if you’re growing cool-season varieties or overseeded turf. In California’s coastal regions and much of Arizona’s desert climate, daytime temperatures stay ideal for slow, steady growth. This allows roots to deepen without the stress of extreme heat.
If you overseeded bermudagrass with perennial ryegrass this fall, now is the time to encourage healthy establishment. Maintain consistent irrigation—less than you’d apply in summer, but enough to prevent drying. In most areas, lawns only need about half an inch of water per week during winter. Deep, infrequent watering is best for promoting strong root development.
Seasonally Smart Mowing Practices
In both states, winter growth slows, but it doesn’t stop entirely. Continue mowing as needed, keeping your mower height slightly higher than during the growing season. This protects the grass from moisture loss and temperature fluctuations. For overseeded ryegrass, maintain a height of 1.25″–1.5″ to support a dense, vibrant winter lawn.
If your bermudagrass is not overseeded, you can reduce mowing dramatically. The grass will be dormant and golden, but healthy beneath the surface. Resist the urge to scalp or cut too short—this can damage the crown and delay spring green-up.
Fertilizing for Winter Success
Winter is a great time to feed cool-season grasses, especially in California’s mild coastal zones and Arizona’s winter lawns. Choose a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to support ongoing growth without encouraging excessive top growth. For dormant bermudagrass, skip nitrogen but consider applying a potassium-rich fertilizer to improve stress tolerance and support spring recovery.
If you’re not sure which product to use, West Coast Turf offers region-specific recommendations that take into account soil type, temperature patterns, and turf variety.
Watch for Winter Weeds
Cooler weather invites broadleaf weeds like clover, dandelion, and spurge. Keep an eye on your lawn and address weeds early to prevent spread. A pre-emergent applied in late winter can help prepare for spring, especially in warmer Arizona regions where weed cycles start early.
Prepare for Spring Now
Even though winter feels quiet, it’s the ideal time to plan spring renovations. If your lawn struggled last summer or you’re thinking about installing new sod, use the cooler season to assess soil health, irrigation efficiency, and turf variety. West Coast Turf’s lineup includes drought-tolerant bermudagrass and low-maintenance blends perfect for the changing water regulations in both Arizona and California.
Winter lawn care in Arizona and California is about working with the season rather than against it. With mild temperatures, manageable growth, and fewer pests, now is the time to support root health, enforce smart mowing habits, and prepare for a lush spring. Whether you manage a backyard, a sports field, or a commercial landscape, West Coast Turf is here with the turf varieties and expert guidance to keep your lawn thriving all year long. West Coast Turf Brings Natural Grass Back to the Big Stage This Bowl Season
Bowl season is here, and once again West Coast Turf is proud to be at the center of two of college football’s most meaningful stages. Our team has been busy bringing the beauty, safety, and performance of natural grass back into the spotlight—most recently in Phoenix for the bowl game at Chase Field on December 26, and once again in Pasadena for the iconic Rose Bowl Game on January 1.
At Chase Field, we installed natural grass over the existing artificial surface last week in preparation for the big matchup. Transforming a baseball stadium with synthetic turf into a championship-ready natural grass football field is no small task—it requires precision, logistics expertise, and a deep understanding of how turf performs under unique conditions. Our crews worked around the clock to ensure the field not only looks incredible on camera, but also delivers the traction, cushioning, and consistency that athletes expect on game day.
Why go natural over artificial? Players feel the difference. Natural grass provides better temperature regulation, more forgiving impact, and an authentic playing experience that simply can’t be replicated synthetically. It’s also a fan favorite—nothing quite matches the look and feel of a real grass field under stadium lights. We’re honored that event organizers trusted West Coast Turf once again to deliver a surface worthy of a postseason spotlight.
We’re also proud to be back at the Rose Bowl—“The Granddaddy of Them All”—for the January 1 game. Our installation was completed in early December, allowing the sod ample time to root in and establish before the nation’s eyes turn to Pasadena. This legendary venue is known for postcard-perfect visuals and pristine field conditions, and we take that responsibility seriously. Every roll of sod, every cut, and every seam is placed with care to uphold the tradition and reputation that the Rose Bowl field is famous for.
Producing these world-class fields doesn’t happen overnight. It starts months in advance at our farms, where we grow premium natural turf specifically for elite sports performance. We carefully select grass varieties for strength, color, density, and durability, then harvest and install them at just the right moment to ensure peak condition for kickoff. From soil prep to final paint striping, our team is hands-on at every stage.
This bowl season is another reminder of why we do what we do. Natural grass fields don’t just look better—they play better. They support athlete safety, elevate the fan experience, and connect today’s games to the traditions that define football’s history.
We’re grateful to our partners, crews, and customers who trust West Coast Turf with the biggest stages in sports. Whether it’s a postseason showdown in Phoenix, a New Year’s Day classic in Pasadena, or your home field or backyard project, we’re committed to delivering the highest-quality natural grass—grown and installed by experts who care.
Here’s to another unforgettable bowl season, and to many more games played the way they were meant to be—on natural grass. For more information, visit westcoastturf.com
